Diagnosis: Puffer with modal fin rays D-8 A-7. Larvae with smaller eye than S. spengleri, uppermost pectoral ray and first dorsal ray about 75% the length of the next ray, and pigment along most of the dorsal caudal peduncle extending down vertically or at a forward angle. These larvae have a more coppery coloration than S. spengleri. This type in Panama may represent S. greeleyi, although S. dorsalis, S. testudineus, S. nephelus and three obscure southern Caribbean species (the exuberantly eponymic S. georgemilleri, S. tyleri, and S. yergeri) cannot be excluded.
